Before you start: Do not sign anything on the spot.
Signing deadlines in severance packages are negotiation tactics, not legal requirements. You have up to 2 years to pursue a wrongful dismissal claim in most provinces.
Before you leave the building (or end the video call), ask for written confirmation of termination, your severance offer in writing, your benefit termination date, and confirmation your ROE will be filed.
Most initial severance offers are below what you're legally entitled to, especially for professionals earning $100K+. Common-law severance, based on court precedent, is almost always higher than statutory minimums. Rule of thumb: roughly 1 month per year of service for mid-level; senior professionals often get more.
